Disaster in the Himalayas: Massive Flash Floods Strike Nepal and Tibet Border
On the morning of 26 August 2026, a series of flash floods along the Trishuli River struck dozens of settlements in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. The floods also affected the Gyirong Port area on the China–Nepal border, an important gateway for cross-border trade and tourism.
The resulting flash floods and mudslides caused massive damage to populated areas, with officials reporting at least 157 confirmed deaths in Nepal and three in China. More than 1,444 people were confirmed missing as search and rescue operations continue, including local residents and tourists. Authorities have issued flood warnings for communities along rivers in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts.

The cause
A massive landslide of ice and rock fell from a mountain glacier. This blocked a local river, creating a temporary dam that quickly burst and sent a wall of water downstream.
Stranded tourists
Over 340 foreign hikers and pilgrims are among the missing, including 133 citizens from India who were traveling in the mountains.
Trade routes broken
The flood completely destroyed the Friendship Bridge, which connects Nepal and China. This has stopped all vehicle traffic and cross-border trade.
