Centrally Funded Himalayan Hill Cities Project: Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik & Siliguri to Get Major Development Boost

he Central Government has announced a major development project for North Bengal's hill and plain regions. Five key cities — Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik, and Siliguri — will be developed as modern "Himalayan Hill Cities" under the new initiative.

West Bengal's Urban Development and Municipal Minister Agnimitra Paul revealed the dream project after an important meeting at the North Bengal administrative headquarters 'Uttar Kanya'. The proposal was put forward by Central Minister Manohar Lal, who suggested upgrading these five cities as Himalayan Hill Cities based on their unique geographical and strategic ecological features.

BJP MP from Darjeeling, Raju Bista, welcomed the Central Government's big step, calling it one of the largest and most long-awaited announcements for the region. The MP said the new state government is now ready to work fully with the Centre to ensure comprehensive and rapid development of hill areas, plains, and Duars.

What the project includes:

Modern waste management systems

Eco-friendly urban transportation

Landslide-resistant infrastructure

World-class connectivity between Siliguri and Darjeeling

Development of hotels, homestays, adventure sports, and handicraft businesses

Jobs for local youth in tourism and infrastructure sectors

The project aims to transform the hills' infrastructure, which had deteriorated during the previous Trinamool government due to disputes over Central funds
