Beyond the Scenic Views—Kurseong’s Rising Waste Crisis Demands Real Action

When the morning fog covers our ridges, Kurseong looks as beautiful as ever. But as the air clears, a very different picture appears. The town is fighting a losing battle against its own poor waste management system.

From popular tourist viewpoints to busy market areas, unmanaged garbage has become a serious civic problem.

For decades, the town has relied on a damaging practice: dumping mixed garbage directly down steep hillsides.

Without proper separation of food waste and plastics at home, this mixed trash causes severe issues:

Monsoon Disasters : During heavy hill rains, loose plastic blocks the natural flow of water in our streams. This floods our roads and can even cause dangerous landslides on unstable slopes.

Contaminated Water : When rain filters through these open trash piles, it turns into a toxic liquid. This harmful fluid can seep into the natural springs that our local families rely on for drinking water.

RULES ARE CHANGING , BUT ENFORCEMENT IS THE KEY

The West Bengal Government has introduced strict cleanliness rules across the hills. Throwing trash in the open is now banned, and households are expected to separate their wet and dry waste. Additionally, positive steps are being taken, like the upcoming waste treatment plant at Suntaley Pakha. and the innovative use of recycled plastic to build local roads. Even the Kurseong Municipality has tied municipal paperwork to waste collection receipts to encourage better habits.

These changes sound great on paper. However, rules mean nothing if people do not follow them. Right now, public awareness is still very low.

A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

The local municipality must fulfill its duty with consistent, daily waste pickup and strict rule enforcement. At the same time, residents must take responsibility by stopping the habit of tossing plastic onto roadsides and ensuring they segregate waste at home. It is time to work together to protect our hills before the environmental damage becomes permanent.
