Bagdogra Airport's Rs 1,560-Crore Terminal Project Moves to Construction Bidding

The hills' main air gateway is a step closer to a major upgrade, with thirteen firms now having placed bids for the civil construction work on Bagdogra Airport's new terminal building, part of a roughly Rs 1,560 crore expansion led by the Airports Authority of India.

The new terminal is being planned as a significant scale-up from Bagdogra's current facilities, with a footprint reported at around 100,000 square metres built in phases, designed to eventually handle in the region of 3,000 to 3,800 passengers during peak hours and up to 10 million passengers a year once fully operational. Exact final specifications will likely be refined as the project moves from planning into construction, but the direction is clear: Bagdogra is being positioned for a substantially larger passenger load than it currently handles.

For Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and the wider region, that matters more than the numbers alone suggest. Bagdogra is the primary air link not just for Darjeeling and Kalimpong but for Sikkim, the Dooars and even parts of Bhutan, making it one of the most consequential pieces of infrastructure for the region's tourism economy. A larger, more modern terminal with greater capacity would ease the congestion that has become increasingly common during peak tourist seasons, when the existing terminal has struggled to comfortably handle passenger volumes, particularly around the autumn and spring travel windows that the hills depend on.

The airport has also been designated as an international gateway, though as of now regular scheduled international flights remain limited. A modernised terminal with greater capacity is widely seen locally as a prerequisite for Bagdogra to realistically grow its international connectivity in the years ahead, alongside the broader push to develop tourism infrastructure across the Darjeeling-Sikkim-Dooars circuit.

With civil construction bids now in, the project moves into a more concrete phase after years of planning discussions. The timeline from bid finalisation to a fully operational new terminal will depend on standard construction schedules for a project of this scale, and AAI has not released a firm public completion date as of this writing. Readers should treat any specific opening date circulating locally as speculative until AAI or the Ministry of Civil Aviation issues an official timeline.

The expansion sits alongside a broader wave of connectivity investment in the region, including the Sevoke-Rangpo rail line inching toward completion and long-standing discussions around metro rail connectivity for the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri corridor. Taken together, these projects point to a region betting heavily on improved transport links to sustain its tourism-driven economy over the coming decade, even as monsoon-season road disruptions continue to underline how much the hills currently depend on a single vulnerable highway network.
