GTA 2026: Anit Thapa Steps Down — Will Ajoy Edwards Return? Life After the Election in Darjeeling

Darjeeling woke up to a different kind of quiet this week. Not the bandh quiet, not the monsoon quiet — the quiet after a resignation.

Anit Thapa has stepped down as GTA Chairman. BGPM sabhasads have followed. In tea shops from Chowk Bazaar to Kurseong, the question is the same: "Abo k hunchha?" — what happens now?

From a purely political view, this was coming. Hamro Party contested the 2022 GTA elections when others boycotted, giving the GTA a legitimacy many in the Hills questioned. Today, Hamro Party barely exists on paper, but Ajoy Edwards never resigned his seat.

That detail matters. With BGPM weakened, sources in Lal Kothi say there is a "very good chance" Edwards could be invited to lead a caretaker arrangement. It would complete a circle he started in 2022.

I walked through Lower Toongsoong yesterday. Pemba Sherpa, who runs a momo stall, put it simply: "Sabai chor eutai dal ko. We voted for water, we got speeches." His son missed school three times last month because of traffic jams on the Pankhabari road — a GTA promise from 2022 still pending.

This is the "life after election" we asked writers to capture in our Story Contest 2026. It's not about party flags. It's about:

- Daily wages still at Rs 250 in many gardens, despite the promise of Rs 350

- The 6-hour Siliguri-Darjeeling jam that makes students miss exams

- Young people leaving for Bangalore because "pahad ma opportunity chaina"

The numbers tell part of the story. BGPM won 19 seats in 2022, Hamro took 14. Today, both numbers feel irrelevant on the ground. What people remember is not the seat count, but whether the tap ran in the morning.

Binita Rai, a Class 12 student from St. Joseph's, told me: "We don't want another chairman. We want a library that stays open after 4pm." That sentiment is showing up in our contest entries — more poems about hope than about parties.

Will Ajoy Edwards return? Politically, the door is open. Morally, the Hills are tired. As one retired teacher in Kalimpong said, "Naitik jimmedari — who will take moral responsibility, not just the chair?"

The GTA was created after years of agitation. In 2026, the agitation is quieter: parents wanting teachers in schools, drivers wanting parking, not promises.

We are collecting these voices for our Story Contest 2026 — theme: "Life After the Election." Winners will be announced August 15 on khabardarjeeling.space. If you have a story from your busty, your school, your taxi stand, tap "Submit Your Story" and check "Contest Entry."

Darjeeling doesn't need another power-grab headline. It needs the tap to run, the road to clear, and the young to stay. That is the real GTA test — not who sits in the chair, but who listens from it.
