Life After Election

- Prasenjit Dutta

The morning after the election, the hills woke up the same way they always did.

The toy train whistled through the mist. The tea gardens stretched like green waves beneath the clouds. The smell of fresh momo drifted through the bazaar. Yet, something had changed—not in the mountains, but in the people.

At a small tea stall in Siliguri, an elderly man folded yesterday's newspaper and smiled at the young shopkeeper.

"ভোট শেষ, এবার কাজের কথা বলি," he said softly.

Everyone laughed.

For weeks, people had argued about politics. Friends had stopped talking. Families had eaten dinner in silence because everyone supported someone different. Social media had become louder than the chirping birds outside.

But now the banners were coming down.

The loudspeakers had fallen silent.

Life had quietly returned.

On my way to college, I saw something that stayed with me forever. Two neighbours who had spent days avoiding each other were repairing a broken roadside drain together. One held the shovel. The other carried stones. They spoke very little, but they worked as one.

I realised that elections decide governments.

People decide communities.

Later that evening, I visited my grandmother in our village. She poured me a cup of hot tea and looked outside at the fading sunset over the hills.

She smiled and said, "রাজনীতি আসে যায়, কিন্তু মানুষ যেন মানুষই থাকে."

Her words felt heavier than any speech I had heard during the election.

That night, electricity suddenly went out. Within minutes, every house stepped outside. Children played with candles. Someone shared homemade pakoras. Another neighbour brought a lantern. Nobody asked who voted for whom.

Darkness had erased every difference.

Humanity had switched on the light.

Days passed.

The roads still had potholes.

The buses were still late.

The tea sellers still woke up before sunrise.

The students still worried about exams.

The farmers still prayed for good rain.

Life did not become perfect because of an election.

It became meaningful only when ordinary people chose kindness over anger, conversation over shouting, and hope over hatred.

I don't know whether the winning candidate will fulfil every promise.

I don't know whether every dream will come true.

But I know one thing.

Every election gives us two choices.

One is to keep fighting after the votes are counted.

The other is to build together after the noise is over.

I choose the second.

Because the future of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik and Siliguri will never be built by speeches alone. It will be built by teachers who continue teaching, drivers who continue driving, farmers who continue growing food, students who continue learning, and neighbours who continue helping each other.

Maybe that is what life after an election truly means.

Not the celebration of one victory.

But the beginning of everyone's responsibility.

As my grandmother always says,

"শেষ পর্যন্ত জেতে মানুষ, যদি মানুষ হওয়া না ভুলি."

And perhaps that is the only victory that really matters.
