GRAVE OF HOPE

June 26, 2026Darjeeling, Darjeeling2 min read👁 23

"Among all the residents of Darjeeling, hope is the only one that dies after every election, yet is reborn before the next."

Every election in Darjeeling begins not with a ballot, but with a seed.

The seed is planted with speeches. It is watered with promises. Under the misty skies of the hills, where endless tea bushes stretch like green waves, dreams bloom faster than flowers.

They tell the tea garden workers, "Just as these tender tea leaves grow into the finest harvest, your children too will grow into a better future."

And the workers believe.

Because people who spend their lives nurturing tea know that every harvest begins with hope.

Their hands are rough, their backs are bent, but their faith remains soft.

They return from long hours in the tea gardens carrying baskets on their backs and promises in their hearts.

Hope becomes their second wage.

The hills have witnessed this season before.

Every five years, new gardeners arrive.

They do not water the tea bushes.

They water expectations.

For a while, the hills are filled with blossoms of possibility.

Schools. Roads. Hospitals. Employment. Dignity.

The plant of hope grows taller than the tea bushes themselves.

Then...

The election ends.

The speeches fall silent.

The footsteps disappear.

And without care, even the healthiest plant begins to wither.

Leaf by leaf.

Dream by dream.

Until all that remains is another grave.

Not a grave of a person.

A grave of hope.

They say hope never dies. Perhaps they are right. It simply learns how to survive being buried.

Yet something strange happens in Darjeeling.

Hope refuses to stay buried.

Before the soil settles, another election arrives.

Another hand plants another seed.

Another promise.

Another dream.

The people gather around it again.

Not because they have forgotten the old graves.

But because hope is the only thing poverty never succeeds in taking away.

No one visits the Grave of Hope. There are no flowers, no candles, no names carved on stone. Yet every tea garden, every broken road, every abandoned promise knows exactly where it lies.

Perhaps that is the tragedy of these hills.

Not that people keep believing.

But that they have never been given a reason to stop believing.

For hope has a grave.

Yet every election, it rises once more, not because it was fulfilled, but because ordinary people cannot afford to live without it
